The S3 400SS MKII replaced the 350 S2 in 1974 with a larger, more torquey 399 cc two-stroke triple. Kawasaki went for usable power rather than peak output, and the longer wheelbase and rubber-mounted engine improved stability and smoothness. It has a single front disc where the earlier S2 had drum brakes, and reviewers praised its smooth, fast delivery while criticising its thirst and short tank range.
